Hurricane Kit
Shell Point Recommended Personal Hurricane Kit For Residents Utilizing the On-Site Shelter
Label all items with your name and court address!
|
What about my documents? Residents should always have an updated inventory of personal property, insurance policies, and other important documents. Those items should be kept in a weatherproof storage container. These records should be safeguarded with other valuables and should not be brought to the hurricane shelter. |
Inexpensive pillow, with name written on it, in plastic bag with name and court written on the bag.
One folding cot or chaise for each resident, not to exceed 27 inches in width. If chair is in a bag, mark both the bag and chair with the resident name. Better yet, put a bungee cord around the chair and leave the bag in your apartment for storage upon return of the chair.
If evacuating with your pet, please click here for separate pet kit information.
Small zippered tote bag including:
Toiletries, including sanitary wipes and tooth wipes which are recommended instead of toothbrush, toothpaste, washcloths and towels, as there is no running water.
Three-day supply of special dietary needs.
Change of clothing.
Flashlight and batteries.
Reading/entertainment materials.
Kits are transported in advance of the residents, provided time allows, and in the event that we don't evacuate the residents, the kits may be in the shelter for days. Do not include any perishable food, beverages, breakable items, medications or valuables in the kits. Medications and oxygen supplies should accompany the resident to the shelter upon evacuation. Upon exiting the shelter after an evacuation, medications and oxygen should accompany the residents, in addition to keys, flashlight, and purse or wallet items as the kit and chair will be returned later.
Oxygen
For residents using oxygen, we ask that, upon evacuation, you bring with you a portable tank (or tanks) to sustain you for the first hours in the shelter and that will also support you during the transport back to your unit. In the shelter, we will supply you with oxygen. You also need to ensure that you have a minimum 3-day supply of oxygen in your apartment throughout the hurricane season to ensure you have a supply whether we evacuate or not to carry you should electricity be interrupted.
The
Shell Point Shelter is one of the safest places to be during a storm, but it is
an "Emergency Shelter." It is not air-conditioned and there are no bathing
facilities. Conditions will be confined and the temperature warm during the
actual passing of a storm. The shelter is stocked with nutritional food supplies
and water, however there will be no hot food served. The shelter has its own
emergency electrical power for lighting, operating fans and limited medical
equipment. There is not electrical capacity for any resident electrical
equipment.
Those residents who have alternate plans to evacuate the area are reminded they should leave between 48 and 72 hours prior to projected storm landfall to avoid congested evacuation routes.
