Samuel
J. Schultz was born on a farm in Mountain Lake, Minnesota, on June 9, 1914, to
David D. and Anna Eitzen Schultz, the fifth of seven children. He held degrees
from Bethel College, John Fletcher College, and Faith Seminary as well as a
Master’s and Doctorate from Harvard Divinity School. Dr. Schultz taught Old
Testament briefly at Gordon College in Massachusetts and Bethel College and St.
Paul Bible College (now Crown College) in Minnesota prior to thirty years of
teaching at Wheaton College (Illinois), where he served as Chair of the
Department of Biblical Studies. An ordained minister, he also served as
interim pastor for numerous congregations in the Midwest and in New England.Dr. Schultz is probably best known for authoring The Old Testament Speaks, first published in 1960 and now in its fifth edition, a widely used text which has been translated into over 20 languages. Other publications include The Prophets Speak, The Message of the Old Testament, Deuteronomy: The Gospel of Love , and The Gospel of Moses, as well as articles for numerous Bible commentaries and other Bible study helps.
In 1943, Sam married Eyla June Tolliver, and on June 17, 2005, they celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary. They have two children: Linda (married to Norwood “Woody” Anderson and living in Brookfield, Wisconsin) and David (married to Esther Chang and living in Lexington, Massachusetts) as well as six grandchildren : Bjorn Anderson, married to Abby and living in Exeter, New Hampshire; Lars Anderson, married to Kelly, living in Milton, Florida, and expecting great-grandson #1; Erika Anderson, engaged to marry Richard Cronin of Dublin, Ireland; Matthew Schultz, a student at New York University; Daniel Schultz, a student at Gordon college; Peter Schultz, a student at Lexington Christian Academy and living in Lexington, Massachusetts.When Sam retired from Wheaton College in 1980, he and his wife June moved to Lexington, Massachusetts, where they were both active at Grace Chapel and Sam served as a Trustee of Gordon-Conwell Seminary and Lexington Christian Academy. In August 2001 they moved to Shell Point, where Sam’s sister, Susan Schultz Rose, and her husband Delbert Rose as well as June’s sister , Martha Hurst , and her husband David Hurst are also residents. In addition to his sister Sue, Sam is also survived by sisters Elizabeth K. Schultz of Bradenton, Florida, and Frieda Ranney of St. Paul, Minnesota, and sister-in-law Ruth Fliehler of Wheaton, Illinois.
