CALL TO ORDER AND OPENING PRAYER
Chairman
Lanpher called the meeting to order at 8:45 AM and Russ Peters offered the
opening prayer.
Mr.
Lanpher welcomed the new 2010 Court Representatives and wished them well.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Linda
Nickerson has been asked to again be Recording Secretary this year. However,
she is currently on a month long cruise and Nita DeWeese is substituting for
this month and again in February.
On a
sad note, Warner Gaines passed away over the Christmas holiday before he could
take his new office as Court Rep for the Arbor. Please remember his wife, Helen, with our prayers. In his
place, Winona Whitehead has agreed to assume Court Representative.
A list was
distributed and Chairman Lanpher asked that each Court Representative record
their email address if they have one.
Mr.
Lanpher announced that as the new Chair, he had a goal for adjournment time.
The reason for that is there are a number of people on the Board as well as
guests who need to catch the bus at 10:15. The goal is therefore, 10:10. Please keep your eyes open as to the
time.
A
tongue in cheek remark was made by Mr. Lanpher: – ÒIÕm wondering about something. You did not accept my motion to have
two of the Resident Meetings at the Woodlands; but by electing me you were
actually agreeing that you would like to have two meetings at the Woodlands. At
the point of New Business I will be happy to entertain a resolution from one of
you who do not live in the Woodlands or the EagleÕs Preserve, to have two of
the meetings in the coming nine months at the Woodlands. Thank you for that.Ó
ROLL CALL OF COURT REPRESENTATIVES
The
roll was called with those present listed above.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF DECEMBER 2, 2009
RESIDENTSÕ COUNCIL MEETING AND APPROVAL OF AGENDA FOR TODAY
On
motion duly made, seconded, and unanimously passed, the Minutes of December 2,
2009, were approved as submitted. The Proposed Agenda for the ResidentsÕ
Council for January 6, 2010, was distributed to each Court Representative
present, and on motion duly made, seconded, and unanimously passed was
approved.
VISITING GUESTS
Mr.
Lanpher introduced Cliff Smith, President of the United Way. Mr. Smith presented an award to Shell
Point for their contributions and participation in the United Way
campaign. Well over $ 60,000 was
donated to help people in our own community. Thank you. Mr. Smith stated 19
residents gave $ 1,000 or more. Again, he expressed his thanks
A
surprise award was given to Carol Palermo who was part of the United Way
Allocations Process. The way United Way distributes the money is by having
someone visit every Agency to review their budgets. United Way packed over
300,000 meals for kids using over 700 volunteers. Carol brought in a crew from
Shell Point who danced and packed. Mr. Smith thanked Carol for organizing that
effort. Carol was presented a plaque for her hard work.
STAFF REMARKS
STEVE MINNIEAR
Dr. Dys
is away on a much needed vacation but would join me in wishing each of you a
Happy New Year and for the new Council Reps Best Wishes.
The Morning
Assurance listing has been circulated. KingÕs Crown has 119 of 120 units
occupied. The Arbor has 128 of 130 occupied. Our skilled nursing facility is
also bursting at the seams. We have 187 beds taken and we have approximately
198 – 199 beds available. We have 26 Medicare and 12 of those are outside
community folks. Our big number right now is the number of permanent residents
in the building. We had budgeted 92 to be permanent life-care people and
presently have 106 with another 5 or 6 expected in the next 30 days.
We are
excited about the beginning work on the Rehabilitation Center. We are sorry for
those who walk the perimeter that you will be taking a bit of a different
route.
The
national H1N1 situation update by the CDC states that visits to doctors have
slightly increased. Number of deaths has increased above the epidemic level. We
are seeing the ÒwaveÓ of activity increase, as was predicted by Dr. South, the
Lee County Epidemiologist. We have a small amount of vaccine available at the
Medical Center. You might want to call and schedule yours. There is only an
administrative fee that we charge to Medicare. Also we recommend you get your
pneumonia shot if you havenÕt had this done.
As to
transportation from the hospital back to Shell Point, I have found the
following. With the number of hospitals in our area, we generally have 5 to 15
residents in hospitals. For those released back to our health care facilities,
the hospital staff is responsible for insuring that any resident being
transferred has transportation. Generally they will do that through a
non-emergency transport system that is able to handle wheel chairs. This may
cost upwards to $ 75.00. If you are being transferred you are welcome to check
with a family member or neighbor who has agreed to drive you. But, again, check
with the hospital Òdischarge planners.Ó They are your focal planning person.
For the independent folks who are returning to their own units, you should work
with the planner also. The non-emergency transport is also available for these
folks. The other alternative is taxi service which would cost approximately $
15 - $ 20 from Health Park. The rates I checked charged $ 7.50 for the first
mile and $2 a mile thereafter. It is not financially prudent for Shell Point to
have Òas-neededÓ transportation services available.
Mr.
Minniear then answered questions raised by several Council Reps:
1.
Will Shell Point have
enough vaccines of the H1N1 for anyone who wants it?
Answer: We order vaccine on an as needed basis
from the Lee County Health Department. It is now available to all ages.
2.
Are you recommending
everyone get it?
Answer: Please talk to your local physician.
SCOTT MOORE
Mr.
Moore touched on 4 subjects:
1.
Each mailbox received
one Passport (See Resident Life, page 16-17). Some mailboxes handle more than
one person. These are available at the Service Desks. Be sure to request
additional Passports if needed.
2.
We are going to have a
Bicycle Roundup. The contact person is Dianne Morton. The Council has all the
responsibility. The Court Reps are to inventory all the bicycles in the Court,
identify those who have not registered their bicycles and to remove the unsafe
bicycles, (but only with the permission of the owner of the bike.) Get the word
out to take care of the bicycles. Dianne will send out packets to each Court.
Return all the information by January 22. DianneÕs number is 454-2061.
3.
Peter Dys will be
giving detailed information at the Gala concerning the construction site for
the Rehab Center. He will then visit each Court and give another detailed
presentation.
4.
As to the request for
additional phone numbers: we donÕt want to circumvent 2190. I want to caution
that you reach a person, rather than leaving a message on the answering
machine. 2190 will also follow up any work order or information given them.
The hand-out concerning the 2190 procedure will go to
everyone.
CHAIRMAN LANPHER
Mr.
Lanpher distributed a copy of the Bylaws so the new representatives would have
a copy. He asked that they please check Article 4. Perhaps had we known these
things we might not have agreed to be here! Check items E, G, H, especially.
Check item L (2190). If your resident will do this, it will cut down your job.
Then, we can bring unresolved matters (see item M) to the Council. Item N is
something good to bring to the Council.
Another
memo was distributed that is most helpful in outlining the Call Center #2190 procedure.
It may help you solve problems brought up by your residents.
REPORTS OF THE REPRESENTATIVES OF COURTS,
KINGÕS CROWN, ARBOR AND PAVILION
Winona
Whitehead wanted to announce how deeply saddened all at the Arbor are by the
loss of our recently elected Representative, Warner Gaines.
OLD BUSINESS
The
final report of the Christmas Fund was given by Phyllis Ingalls. A total of
$320,150 was raised, with $ 318,390 given out to 851 employees. 421 employees
received the full share of $500.00.
Phyllis expressed thanks to the generous residents who made this
possible. She then read excerpts from a moving thank you note.
Chairman Lanpher thanked Phyllis and
her committee for a job well done.
NEW BUSINESS
A
motion is needed to allow the five 2010 Shell Point Funding Appeals:
1.

2. Annual Library Fund – March 3 – 18
3.
Employee Gift Program – March – November
4.

On
