During this workshop you will be taught the different parts of a mouse and how they are used to POINT, PARK, CLICK, DRAG, DROP, and SCROLL- and when to use the left and right buttons on the mouse. You will practice using the mouse playing Solitaire on the computer and doing mousing exercises on Internet sites:

This hands-on course will start out very basic and progress into the more advanced aspects of Genealogy research. You will learn how to use Internet Explorer browser software to access various Internet web sites, how to execute Internet searches using genealogy sites and both Google and Yahoo search engines, and how to download documents and graphics from a web site to a flash drive. Handouts will be made available to augment each session. During each session of this course approximately half of the time will be dedicated to supervised practice.

PREREQUISITES
To be successful, you must have completed the COMPUTER COLLEGE PREP SCHOOL course, or have otherwise developed basic computer skills. Without basic computer skills you could be uncomfortable. Specifically you must know:

Goals and Objectives: This course is designed to increase your skill and confidence in using your computer.  It will cover the basic operations of the computer, programs, start menu, (including the control panel), commands and saving documents.  Works will be used for word processing and formatting.  You will learn good e-mailing practices and how to get more out of surfing the Internet.    

This course will be taught using the MCL computers which have Vista as the operating system.  Having Vista on your personal computer is not required since the tutorial is designed for use with Vista or XP.  There will be laptops with Vista available in both computer labs for practice.  It is expected that you will practice the lessons between sessions to consolidate what you have learned.

PREREQUISITES
It is desirable for you to have completed the AFTER PREP SCHOOL BASICS - LEVEL 1 course or have otherwise developed basic computer skills. Without basic computer skills you could be uncomfortable in this course. This course is for serious photographers who would like to turn their snapshots into pictures. Some of the subjects that will be covered are: rotating, cropping and resizing pictures; correcting lighting and color balance; correcting parallax distortion; adding objects to and removing objects from pictures; changing colors of objects, changing sharpness. We will be using Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0 that is currently installed in the Lab computers.

PREREQUISITES

There will be 10 Nintendo DS Lite stations with Big Brain Academy software installed for students to exercise and take home between sessions. Big Brain Academy is the entrance level brain fitness package for a series of brain fitness courses, and is a prerequisite for taking Flash Focus and Brain Age 2 brain fitness courses.

Session 1 Introduction to the Nintendo DS Lite, and to Big Brain Academy Brain Fitness software.  Each student will be loaned a Nintendo DS Lite, including a charger, and software.  Appropriate handouts and instructions will be made available.

OOMA, a rapidly growing new telephone product uses digital technology over the internet rather than landlines used for conventional telephones.  OOMA perquisites are high speed internet connection and a onetime outlay of $250 for enabling equipment.  Thereafter operating costs are approximately $1 per month.
 
This workshop will focus on: OOMA demonstration and how to buy, install and use it.
