IRS, Secret Service and US military and foreign intelligence
agencies.
He is returning to Shell Point with a new class he created based upon
questions from Shell Point residents when he last taught at Shell
Point. The topic is perfect for our July passport theme, North America, as it answers questions about the role of the atom bombs in keeping North America from further repercussions of WWII. Did the use of atom bombs end WWII and did their use save lives? This discussion explores traditional and revisionist theories. It includes recently declassified information about Japanese intentions and actions. This two part presentation is a frank and open discussion about one of the most important, interesting, and emotional events in history. |

The Cape Coral Historical Society established the Museum to
preserve
the history of Cape Coral and Southwest Florida. Originally the museum
was housed in the club house at the Cape Coral Country Club but was
moved to Four Freedoms Park in 1977. There the museum was part of a
multi-purpose facility. In 1983 the Historical Society moved the
building to Cultural Park which is the permanent home of the Museum
today. Let’s go explore our neighboring town of Cape Coral and learn
about its roots and enjoy its stories. *There will be standing and walking required during this tour so please wear comfortable walking shoes. |

This nautical
adventure takes the Shell Point Academy On The Go group
over to the east coast of Florida to explore the Palm Beach Maritime
Museum. The Museum is comprised of four facilities, the Coast Guard
Station, the Kennedy Bomb Shelter, the Marine Science field office, the
education center at Currie Park, and the Maritime Academy. The group
will arrive in time for a lunch at the Tiki Hut restaurant located at
the Riviera Marina before the water taxi takes them out to Peanut
Island. The group connects with their guide on Peanut Island where they
will experience guided tours of both the Kennedy bunker and Coast Guard
Station. Education is the passion of the Maritime Museum and
their
staff so this Academy On The Go group is sure to take away a lot of new
found knowledge and maritime memories. The group will travel by chartered bus complete with bathroom facilities. The ride is over 2 hours but a rest area stop will be in the travel plans both to and from the Maritime Museum. *There is substantial walking and standing involved in this excursion. |

The Calusa Nature Center and Planetarium is a private, not
for profit,
environmental education organization located in Fort Myers,
Florida.
Their 105 acre site has a museum, three nature trails, a Planetarium,
butterfly and bird aviaries, a gift shop and meeting and picnic areas. Before the Shell Point group heads in to the planetarium to learn about the mysteries of the universe there will be time allowed for visiting the Audubon aviary which houses permanently injured birds of prey (hawks, vultures, bald eagles, owls and more). After the planetarium show the group will finish their day with a self guided stroll through the living history museum where residents can learn about Southwest Florida's natural history. At the Calusa Nature Center visitors are given an opportunity to get up close and personal with of some of the resident creatures, including a skunk, bobcat, raccoon, white tail deer, Butterfly Aviary and Native Plant Nursery. A gift shop is also on site where you can make purchases that benefit the programs and animals of the Calusa Nature Center. *There will some walking and standing involved for this Academy On The Go trip. |

Spending a day
at the zoo is always a treat! The Naples Zoo offers so
many educational programs, shows and exhibits to enjoy. For example you
can take a primate expedition cruise, meet the keeper, attend the open
air theater show entitled “Planet Predator,” meet the serpents, see
sunbathing snakes, take a tropical plant trek, and watch the alligators
being fed at the bay. All kinds of fun and all kinds of choices!
Recently the zoo has added exhibits for Malaysian Tigers and black
bears. There are also choices for lunch. Residents can either bring
their own sack lunch to make themselves a picnic or they can buy lunch
at “Wynn’s at the Zoo” which is a family favorite lunch spot since
1948. But remember, no feeding the animals! This trip promises to be a

Nestled on five acres of native Florida gardens, the Naples
Museum
showcases two historic cottages, a working archaeology lab, a Seminole
village, tropical orchid house, wildlife displays, a Sherman Tank, a
1910 steam logging locomotive and a recreated Seminole War fort. From prehistoric saber cat skeletons and Calusa Indians, to Spanish explorers and Seminole warriors, newly created exhibits and dioramas capture the panorama of local history. Dr. Frank C. Craighead was a leading authority on Florida’s native plants and water resources and played a major role in preservation efforts focused on the Everglades and South Florida’s wetlands. The Dr. Craighead Laboratory is a key attraction for adults and youth alike. From the museum the group will head to “The Cheesecake Factory” for lunch.
