Coffee With a Shell Point Author
This fall the Academy celebrates Shell Point residents who have written and published books. Their topics are varied, as are their backgrounds. What they have in common, in addition to their book credits, is that they are your neighbors. Three at a time they will share with you:
What writing their book has meant to their life
A brief synopsis of their book
A five minute reading from their book
Sit back with coffee and a tasty treat while you enjoy this special glimpse of creativity. Though each book is for sale in the Shell Point Gift Shop, you will be able to purchase an autographed copy at the program.

Located on the shores of Little Sarasota Bay in Osprey, Florida, Historic Spanish Point is an archaeological, historical and environmental site museum. The year 2007 marks the 25th anniversary of the museum being open to the public, but the history of the site goes back 5,000 years to Florida’s first people. The shell middens built by them cover much of the 30-acre site. Florida’s pioneer past is also evident at Historic Spanish Point through the legacy of the Webb family from New York, who traveled to Florida in 1867. Settling on the bay at the high point of land recommended to them by a Spanish trader they met in Key West, they named the homestead Spanish Point in honor of that trader. Turn of the century Sarasota was a place of growth and Spanish Point became a part of the winter estate of Chicago socialite Mrs. Potter Palmer. She added her own touches to the landscape in the form of gardens and garden architecture.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, bring sunscreen and drinking water. The tour is approximately one mile of walking and takes about 2 hours. We will stop for lunch on the return trip.

Framed in forests of mangrove trees, the shell mounds and ridges of Mound Key rise more than 30 feet above the waters of Estero Bay. Prehistoric Native Americans are credited with creating this island's complex of mounds with an accumulation of seashells, fish bones, and pottery. Mound Key is believed to have been the ceremonial center of the Calusa Indians when the Spaniards first attempted to colonize Southwest Florida. In 1566, the Spanish governor of Florida established a settlement on the island with a fort and the first Jesuit mission in the Spanish New World. The settlement was abandoned three years later after violent clashes with the Indians. Archaeologist, Michael Wylde, from the Randell Research Center will be our guide. The only access to the island is by the boat we will take from Lover’s Key; there are no facilities. This trip involves significant uphill hiking. Please bring a daypack with drinking water, snack, sunscreen, bug spray etc. We will stop for lunch on the return trip.

What will universal, single payer health care cost and how can we pay for it?
Should we support incremental approaches that expand existing systems such as Medicaid, Medicare and Federal Employee Health Benefits Plan to cover all citizens?
If our healthcare system is managed by the government, will patients, physicians and hospitals suffer from excessive bureaucracy?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the House Bill – National Health Insurance Act – H.R. 676 introduced by John Conyers?
These and other questions will be discussed from the perspectives of our panelists.
