Caregiver Support Group Formed

Caregivers of individuals with Memory Impairment Meet to Share Ideas and Coping Strategies

The Department of Behavioral Health has formed a caregiver therapy/support group for residents with spouses who suffer from a memory disorder, such as dementia.  This new group is scheduled to begin February 13.  The purpose of the group is to meet the overall needs of Shell Point residents who serve as caregivers.

In order to maintain continuity of care and to meet the many educational needs of those individuals caring for memory-impaired loved ones, the group will meet weekly on Wednesdays at 10:00 a.m. for a one hour session.

According to Dr. Nancy Spencer, one of the group's organizers, this group will address such topics as overcoming the daily functional limitations of having a spouse who suffers from memory decline; learning ways to better cope with the psychological, emotional and cognitive changes that coincide with memory loss; caregiver stress issues; mood changes that coincide with memory changes; and dealing with the day-to-day situations that arise from dealing with dementia.  Tips for helping will also be shared.

"We feel that a group format is important because these caregivers have become experts in dealing with memory loss on a day-to-day basis and have valuable information to share with one another," said Dr. Spencer.  "Additionally, this group will allow its members to learn and regularly utilize relaxation techniques as a means to reduce muscle tension and stress."

You MUST be registered in order to attend this weekly group.  If you would like a packet of information, including registration materials, please contact Mardee Lader at 415-5435.  If you have clinical questions, please contact Dr. Nancy Spencer at 454-2043.
