Irving Berlin was hailed by George Gershwin as the “greatest songwriter that ever lived,” while Jerome Kern famously remarked, “He has no place in American music; he is American music.” This engaging program explores the life and enduring legacy of one of America’s most influential composers and lyricists. FGCU’s Dr. Tom Cimarusti will examine a selection of Berlin’s most celebrated works, including “Alexander’s Ragtime Band” and “Cheek to Cheek.” Guests are invited to enjoy an afternoon celebrating this towering figure of American music, often referred to as “America’s Schubert.”
