Celebrating Over 50 Years As A Key Amenity At Shell Point
Hurricane Recovery:
Yay, the Woodshop is mostly back up and running after hurricane Ian thanks to Shell Point and a tremendous effort of more than 3000 man-hours by Woodshop volunteers.
Here are some photos of the Woodshop taken during the early stage of the post hurricane cleanup and after much of the recovery efforts had been completed. A large version of this montage can be seen at the Tribby Arts Center.
Many thanks to all who pitched in to make this happen.
We look forward to getting back to our projects and especially helping Shell Point, the surrounding community, and our fellow residents.
Tribby Exhibition:
Stay tuned for our next Tribby exhibition participation in early 2024. In the mean time, come see us at the Artist & Artisan Holiday Craft Bazaar, November 15-16, 2023.
Vista Cay Construction:
In light of the anticipated Vista Cay construction impact, we expect to have to move to a temporary “off site” location soon. We know this will create inconveniences for many but hope you will make the effort to stay in touch and involved during this challenging time. We are investigating ways to mitigate the impact of this temporary move.
We all look forward to the day when the Woodshop moves to its permanent home back here at Shell Point!
Stay tuned to this web page for more information as it becomes available.
Please drop by to see us and check out our latest projects.

(This section includes excerpts from the “History of Shell Point” )
Wow! The Woodshop was founded in 1969! It has grown and evolved over the years. Here is a little history from the early days.
While Enjoying Fulfilling Volunteer Opportunities, volunteerism has always been a natural and important part of the Shell Point culture and can be traced all the way back to Shell Point’s very first residents, Ralph and Emilie Torgerson . During the early months of the community’s development, the couple moved into a mobile home located on Shell Point’s undeveloped property to keep an eye on the property while it was being developed. Having been missionaries in Mali, West Africa, it is easy to believe that prior experiences in the mission field, coupled by their deep faith in God, made these two early villagers well suited for life at Shell Point.
With the Torgersons as their first example, it became clear early that early on Shell Point residents enjoyed volunteering their time and talents to benefit their friends and neighbors. In many in stances, volunteers with a particular passion or lifelong expertise worked together with Shell Point to start volunteer led programs, using space provided by Shell Point. Many of these programs are still going strong, decades later.
CARPENTRY AND CAMARADERIE AT THE WOODSHOP
In 1969, resident Bill Bell founded the Woodshop at Shell Point Village, as a place where practical skill and creativity could come together. Many men moving to Shell Point Village in those days didn’t want to leave their tools and woodworking projects behind, so the Woodshop was an important amenity. Whether carving an intricate bird sculpture, building a grandfather clock from scratch or just repairing a wobbly kitchen table for a next door neighbor, the Woodshop provided the space and use of the growing inventory of tools and machinery-all of which were purchased and donated by members of the resident-led group. In addition to building projects from wood, relationships were being built too. The camaraderie between the members was evident, especially during the daily 10 o’clock coffee break. In the (sic) the Woodshop was veritable sales tool. Several retired men who worked at the Woodshop as part-time supervisors actually became residents a few years later. Such was the case of Bob Selkirk and Wes Allison. “If it weren’t for the Woodshop, I wouldn’t be here,” Wes used to claim. Through the years the Woodshop was expanded to accommodate additional members.
This area displays a sampling of the projects built by various artisans of the Woodshop.
